Back by popular demand, Black Nativity returns to Little Rock this Christmas!

Experience this Gospel retelling of the Nativity through high energy music and extraordinary dance. Acclaimed poet Langston Hughes creates a unique theatrical experience by using dialogue, narration, gospel songs, and folk spirituals to celebrate cultural traditions and the birth of the Christ Child. Originally premiering in 1961, it was one of the first plays Off-Broadway written by an African American and has been presented around the world over the last 60 years. Honor the season with this joyous holiday celebration.

Featuring the songs “Let Everything That Hath Breath (Psalm 150),” “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “What Child Is This” and “Joy to the World/Joyful, Joyful,” this gloriously joyful noise serves an unforgettable holiday experience.

“Black Nativity spreads joy.”
―
The New York Times

"...an exhilarating must-see,  a theatrical and musical high from beginning to end, a pulse-pounding pageantful of talent and praise."

― DC Theater Arts

Running time is approximately 2 hours, with one 20 minute intermission.

A Note from the Director...

"This compelling and intimate experience is set to captivate audiences and evoke the magic of the holiday season through a celebration of faith, family, and community, all imbued with the black experience. Black Nativity is a profoundly moving gospel rendition of the Christmas story, artfully weaving in black traditions, spirituals, gospel music, and dance. This version's production brings to life the nativity story in a fresh and vibrant way, portraying a family's journey as they come together to spend the holidays with their matriarch, who has recently lost her husband - the family's rock and pastor. The story explores themes of grief, healing, and finding stability during the holiday season. This multi-generational tale of reverence and love, accompanied by soul-stirring music and an uplifting message, will undoubtedly captivate audiences of all ages."
